One artist's exploration of the obsessive nature of art.
The 'black and white' part of the title refers to work produced as part of the Mussared's 2004 'Plimsoll Line' series. The black and white works are an obsessive exploration of the drawn and painted line and explore the balance provided by art in the sometimes chaotic and fast-pace life of Mussared. The red with applied gold leaf was the pathway into her predominantly red 'Storylines' series completed upon returning from living and surviving a bitterly cold northern Europe in 2005. Combined with selected pieces from these two bodies of work, Mussared has created a new series 'Red All Over', a relentless investigation and obsession with the colour red.
"I started producing mono-tonal and bi-tonal mixed media work about ten years ago as a reaction to the previous years producing decorative and highly coloured textiles in multiple colourways. So it has been a bit of a 'love/hate' relationship with colour as I have tried to avoid letting colour get in the way of what I was trying to express. I havw embraced the concepts of spiritual minimalism, and the limited use of colour and repetitive mark-making has become an important focus for recent work" says Mussared.
