Wood Fired Kilns

The Groundhog Kiln

Built in 1996 by renowned ceramicist, Fred Olsen, during the 8th National Ceramics Convention in Canberra, Strathnairn Arts’ wood fired kiln has continued to be used by a wide variety of makers ever since.

Currently fired twice a year, the Groundhog Kiln is maintained and operated by the dedicated members of the Wood Firing Group.

Members of the Wood Firing Group include:

  • full-time makers,

  • part-time makers,

  • artists,

  • students, and

  • wood-fire enthusiasts.

The group works together to maintain the kilns, split and stack wood, pack and fire the kilns and then enjoy the results of their combined efforts.
