Sally Black
Trails
Homestead Gallery 1 & 2, 23 September - 18 October
Trails brings together two bodies of work shaped through drawing and observation across the Canberra region.
The watercolour monotypes and paintings are inspired by time spent deep within the landscape surrounding the Murrumbidgee River and the Ginninderry Conservation Corridor. Following the path of the river, walking trails and shifting viewpoints off the trail, these works explore the directions and rhythms found within the landscape.
Layered watercolour and monotype processes echo the movement and unpredictability of the river itself.
Alongside these works is a series of over 20 pen and watercolour sketches, bringing to life bookshops across Canberra and the surrounding region. These drawings form the basis of a hand-drawn Canberra Bookshop Trail Map, tracing another way of moving through place — from one bookshop doorway to the next.
Developed from Sally’s studio at Strathnairn Arts alongside the Ginninderry Conservation Corridor, Trails reflects a visual art practice a visual art practice shaped by movement through landscape and community, expressed through painting, printmaking, and drawing.
BIO
Sally Black is a Canberra-based artist creating works on paper that celebrate curiosity and joy. At the core of her practice is the belief that seeing the world from a different perspective helps us find the delight in it. Working with water-based mediums across painting, printmaking and drawing, Sally explores unusual perspectives and playful distortions in both natural and built landscapes.
Her pen and watercolour pieces capture the charm of everyday scenes, while her paintings and prints embrace the loose, impressionistic flow of watercolour inks- resulting in semi-abstracted landscapes with no clear beginning or end.
Sally is a studio holder at Strathnairn Arts, situated alongside the Ginninderry Conservation Corridor and the Murrumbidgee River. The surrounding landscape provides rich inspiration for her artworks, often appearing in her semi-abstracted depictions of the Canberra region.
Sally’s artwork is part of the ACT Public Art Collection, and she has completed numerous corporate and private commissions and collaborations. Her work reflects a sense of curiosity and wonder- an invitation to see the world with fresh eyes.
