Matthew Freeman is a sculptor, installation artist, and contemporary jeweller whose body-oriented practice is grounded in the expansive landscapes of Australia’s east coast. Working across sculpture and metal, Freeman investigates the concept of the sublime, using intricate hollows, stone surfaces, and processes of erosion to explore embodiment, personal agency, and the boundaries of human experience.
Freeman holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts with First Class Honours in Gold and Silversmithing from the ANU School of Art & Design, as well as a Master of Fine Arts in Jewelry & Metalsmithing from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), supported by a RISD Fellowship and the Tiffany & Co. Scholarship. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including selection for the prestigious PICA Hatched National Graduate Show, the Craft ACT Emerging Contemporaries Exhibition Award, and group exhibitions across the United States.
