Gallery hire information
This information is provided to assist you plan your exhibition.
Please forward your application for approval to the Promotions Officer,
Margaret Carlin by emailing - info [at] strathnairn.asn.au or telephoning 02 6254 2134 and leaving a message with your name and telephone number.
In you application please include the following documentation:
- A proposal that briefly outlines the exhibition you intend to show, including concept or theme, the media, proposed number of works, and whether a group or solo show. Please indicate your preferred dates, as well as whether you require only one (indicate which eg Gallery 1 or Gallery 2) or both of the Galleries. If you are not familiar with the Galleries here at Strathnairn it is recommended that you visit before lodging you proposal.
- Please provide contact details for the organizer for the show including telephone number, mobile contact, and email details. If you have a website, please also include the web address.
- A current C.V. for all potential exhibitors
- Artists' statement
- Visual documentation of your work, the media and the dimensions. This may be in digital form as jpegs.
Assessment of your proposal takes place at the monthly meeting of the Strathnairn Executive
- Access to gallery outside standard hours
- You may wish to bring people to view the exhibition outside standard gallery hours (see below). Please negotiate access with the caretaker Michael Sainsbury on (02) 6254 2134.
- Disabled access
- There is a flat access around the garden and into the gallery through the sunroom. There is a toilet suitable for the disabled adjacent to the gallery.
- Gallery hours
- Standard hours are Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 4.30pm.
- Gallery sitting
- The artist/s, or their representatives is expected to be in or near the Gallery whilst their exhibition is open.
- Assistance with gallery sitting
- If you are unable to attend for part or all of one day during your exhibition, please contact the individual members of SCOOP who are sitting on those days to let them know. The roster with names and phone numbers is on the sales table at the front door of SCOOP. Please note that a commission is charged for sales made by SCOOP members.
- Commission on sales
- There is no commission charged on sales made by the artist. However, a flat commission of 30% will be charged on all sales by a SCOOP member if the artist is not present.
- Exhibition openings
- Exhibition openings are organized by the exhibiting artist. The opening can be any day at 6pm one evening (Wednesday - Friday) or a midday event on Saturday. The artist is responsible for any catering and preparation/clean up for the opening. Glasses and platters are available from the kitchen. A fridge is also available for drinks and oven and microwave for heating food.
- Hire charges
- There are two gallery spaces in the Strathnairn Homestead (Gallery 1 and Gallery 2) that can be hired individually or together. The charge is $25.00 per week per space. The length of your exhibition is subject to availability but is usually 3 weeks to a maximum of 4 weeks.
- Invitations
- Invitations are the responsibility of the artist/s. However the Promotions Officer can assist you to produce a simple DL sized invitation and provide samples of previous invitations. If you are planning to print an invitation, please have the text approved by the Promotions Officer or a Committee member.
- Insurance
- Insurance against breakage and theft is the responsibility of the artist. If the artist is not present and the gallery spaces are being minded by SCOOP members, no responsibility is accepted for breakages or theft.
- Parking
- There is plenty of free parking outside the Homestead.
- Public transport
- ACTION buses run along Drake Brockman Drive into Spofforth Street in front of the Belconnen Golf Course at regular intervals. The nearest bus-stop is 900 metres from the beginning of the drive.
Publicity for your exhibition
Strathnairn Gallery and Arts Association has a Promotions Officer, Margaret Carlin who can assist artists obtain publicity for exhibitions.
Subject to receiving information such as artist’s statements/media releases and good quality images in time, the Promotions Officer will arrange free media for your exhibition. Free exhibition listings are placed with:
- Canberra Times
- Whats Going On (published on Fridays)
- Preview in Times Out and review in Canberra Times
- These are at the discretion of the Arts Editor and require a media release.
- The Chronicle WOTZON
- Information is obtained from communities online website
- Canberra Arts Marketing
- The Arts Around Canberra website and monthly newsletter
- Radio
- Artsound Art Diary (half-an-hour arts information segment through CAM)
- Listing of event on Community Bulletin. ABC local radio 666
- Possible interview on Artscope - Artsound
- Possible interview on ABC Radio - Artbeat
Apart from the Visual Arts Diary in the Times 2 section of the Canberra Times, free media coverage of your exhibition is not guaranteed as it is dependent upon a variety of factors at the time. Artists are encouraged to seek their own publicity through sector publications such as Art Monthly, Craft Art International, Textile Fibre Forum etc.
- Advertising
- Artists are encouraged to place advertisements for their exhibition in the local media. Strathnairn Arts Association is a member of Canberra Arts Marketing and is eligible for discounted advertising rates with the Canberra Times and Chronicle. Exhibiting Artists will be asked to share the cost of paid advertising. Any wording for proposed advertising should be approved by the Committee of Strathnairn Association or the Promotions Officer.
- Strathnairn web site
- The Promotions Officer will arrange to have the exhibition advertised on the Strathnairn web site.
- Mailing and emailing lists
- Strathnairn has a mailing and emailing list of members and visitors. The Promotions Officer will email exhibition information provided by the artists to everyone on the email list. Cost of invitations, envelopes and postage of mail out of will be covered by the Artist.
- Review of exhibitions
- Reviews of exhibition in the Canberra Times are at the discretion of the arts editors. Assistance with a media release is available from the Promotions Officer.
